Let Phil Meador Toyota check your air filter and see if it needs replaced.

Your car air filter is a small component with a vital job. Its purpose is to filter the air that enters your engine to keep dirt and other debris out. Like other components, your air filter will eventually need replacement at your local car dealership. We want to tell you about some of the signs that you’re going to need a new air filter.

The Filter Is Dirty

The easiest way to figure out if you need a new air filter is to check it. Unlike many other components, you can easily access the filter and examine it at any time. The filter is located in the air filter box, which is positioned just behind the radiator grille. The location of this box is marked in your car manual. All you need to do is to find and open the box.

A healthy filter is white or cream. As time passes and the filter absorbs dirt and debris, its color will change. If your filter looks brown or black, it’s clogged with dirt and needs to be replaced ASAP. It’s quick and easy to replace, and we can do it while you wait and enjoy a coffee.

Low Fuel Efficiency

Your Toyota engine is designed for both power and fuel efficiency. If you find you’re making more trips to the gas station than you used to, your air filter could be the problem. Combustion requires fuel and air, as air allows the fuel to ignite and burn correctly. If your air filter is blocked, the amount of air in your engine will be drastically reduced.

If your engine doesn’t have enough air, the fuel-air mix will be wrong. Your engine will contain more fuel than air, and the lack of air means much of the fuel in your engine won’t burn. Unburnt fuel is dumped out of the cylinders following combustion and is wasted as it exits via the tailpipe. Gas consumption will increase, and you’ll also experience poor acceleration. Replacing the filter will fix these problems immediately.

Black Exhaust Smoke

Black exhaust smoke means that too much unburnt fuel is entering the exhaust system. As we saw above, large quantities of fuel are wasted if your engine lacks air. The unused fuel enters the catalytic converter, which isn’t designed to process unburnt fuel. The increased temperature inside the converter can damage it.

After passing through the converter, the fuel exits the tailpipe as a black cloud with a strong stench of gas. You might also see some sparks as unburnt fuel particles touch the hot tailpipe. We’ll replace your air filter, and these problems will disappear.

An air filter is very cheap and can prevent expensive damage to your engine. Call us at Phil Meador Toyota to replace your air filter in Pocatello at your convenience.
